Financed Emissions: Leading the Transition to a Low-Carbon Economy

Greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) associated with lending, underwriting and investment activities are more than 700 times higher on average than a financial institution’s direct emissions. Financial institutions are increasingly asked to be transparent about these financed emissions, in addition to their own generated GHG emissions.

How are investors tackling key challenges in implementing climate commitments and reducing the carbon emissions of their portfolio companies?

Join MSCI, the U.N. Principles for Responsible Investment and practitioners from across the investment industry to take a progress check and examine some of the practical questions that investors are confronting as they put net-zero into practice.

Topics to be explored include the real-world impact of climate-aligned investment strategies, the role of benchmarks in facilitating the flow of capital for the low-carbon transition, and the financing of sustainably produced energy and climate-change adaptation, as well as how the comprehensive U.S. climate law could turbocharge sustainable investment.

The in-person breakfast will take place during Climate Week NYC, which will bring together policymakers, business leaders and stakeholders from across society in conjunction with the opening of the 77th session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York.

Financed emissions and the real-economy transition
To convert climate commitments into action, investors need to know the carbon footprints and emissions pathways of companies and other assets they’re investing in. How are investors assessing emissions within their portfolios, what data are they using to allocate capital in line with net-zero targets, and how is climate action by investors and financial institutions driving decarbonization of the global economy?

Panelists:

  • Oliver Marchand, Managing Director, Global Head of ESG Research and Development at Climate Risk Center, MSCI
  • Chris Snyder, Guidehouse Director & North American lead for the PCAF Secretariat, Guidehouse

Net-zero strategies for investors: What’s next?
As investors sharpen their focus on aligning portfolios with climate targets, how are equity and fixed-income index strategies evolving to incorporate net-zero goals? How can passive strategies contribute to the reallocation of capital toward less emissions-intensive investments and clean solutions, and what is missing from current approaches?

Panelists:

  • Guenther Thallinger, Allianz SE Board Member & Chair UN convened Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance, Allianz Group
  • Laura Segafredo, Global Head of Sustainable Research, BlackRock
  • Tom Mitchell, Managing Director and Partner, Cambridge Associates

Infrastructure finance for the energy transition and climate adaptation
Transitioning a vast economy to sustainably produced energy and financing projects that will help us adapt to a changing climate present a massive challenge. As investors begin to steer capital toward achieving net-zero, what infrastructure and other real assets are the top priorities, how might the new U.S. climate law supercharge America’s energy transition, and what mechanism can help to close the gap globally between where capital goes and where countries need it?

Panelists:

  • Elchin Mammadov, Vice President, ESG & Climate Industry Research, MSCI
  • Bruce Schlein, Director, Head of ESG, OMERS
  • Kim Carnahan, Senior Director for Net Zero Fuels, ENGIE Impact
