| 1968 | The Capital International Indices are published, the first set of global stock market indices for non-US markets. |
| 1986 | Morgan Stanley obtains from Capital exclusive rights to license the indices. The indices are branded Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI). |
| 1998 | MSCI Inc. is formed and operated jointly by Morgan Stanley and Capital. |
| 2004 | MSCI acquires Barra, a leading provider of portfolio and firm wide investment risk management systems and services. As part of this transaction, MSCI also acquires Financial Engineering Associates (FEA), a firm specializing in energy derivatives modeling. |
| 2007 | MSCI completes an initial public offering, listing on the New York Stock Exchange. Morgan Stanley retains controlling interest in MSCI. |
| 2009 | MSCI fully separates from Morgan Stanley. |
| 2010 | MSCI acquires RiskMetrics and its subsidiary Institutional Shareholder Services, expanding MSCI's risk management offerings and moving into corporate governance and the ESG space. Later that year MSCI acquires Measurisk, a leading provider of independent risk transparency and risk measurement tools for hedge fund investors. |
