If city life becomes less appealing #postCovid19, outward migration could mean more human encroachment into wild lands. As California homeowners have learned from recent fire seasons, spreading out from urban centers risks losing the buffer zone between inhabited and uninhabited land. Ironically, loss of buffer zones could accelerate the emergence of the next pandemic: Increasing human-to-wildlife proximity could trigger new diseases. At the same time, decreasing biodiversity could shrink the pool of novel drug compounds.
