MSCI in Practice: Climate 101: from the basics to defining a climate strategy
Climate change is the single greatest challenge humankind has faced and its consequences are already all too apparent. The World Economic Forum’s 2022 Global Climate Risk Report ranks “Climate Action Failure” and “Extreme Weather” as the top 2 most severe risks on a global scale over the next 10 years.
The lion’s share of listed companies are sharply misaligned with the goal of preventing the worst effects of a warming planet. Listed companies are on track to cause average temperatures to rise by nearly 3°C above preindustrial levels, according to MSCI’s latest Net Zero tracker (October 2021). As a consequence, regulators are increasingly asking investors to manage and disclose climate-related risks.
