How project integrity is assessed

MSCI Carbon Project Ratings independently assess the integrity and risks of carbon credit projects. Each rating reflects a project's combined performance across six criteria, covering both emissions impact and implementation.

The ratings build on key industry integrity initiatives, including the ICVCM's Core Carbon Principles, and apply in-depth, rules-based evaluations at the individual project level. Together, these assessments draw on extensive project-level documentation and one million project data points across more than 4,000 projects.1

The result is a structured assessment of how likely it is that a credit from a given project represents a real, measurable and lasting reduction or removal of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, based on available information and defined evaluation criteria.

The rating scale

MSCI Carbon Project Ratings summarize project integrity on a seven-point scale from AAA (highest) to CCC (lowest). Higher ratings indicate stronger confidence in the project’s climate impact and implementation. Lower ratings signal greater uncertainty or risk.

Conclusion

MSCI Carbon Project Ratings bring multiple integrity criteria together into a single consistent scale, providing a structured way to compare projects and assess integrity risk.
