Managing the Energy Transition in Equities

Preview

Climate transition risk is getting harder to navigate. Policies are fragmenting, geopolitical priorities are shifting and the companies that win or lose financially keep changing with them. Does being prepared for the transition still matter?

Our analysis suggests it does. Companies facing the most transition pressure (often higher emitters) benefited when the policy backdrop favored them, but that advantage flipped when the policy environment reversed. Transition readiness told a steadier story. Companies with higher readiness scores outperformed less-prepared peers regardless of the policy backdrop, and they subsequently decarbonized faster — suggesting corporate strategy and capability, not external pressure, were the stronger drivers of real emissions reductions.

For investors, the findings position transition readiness as a decision-useful signal for managing financial risk, decarbonization objectives and the trade-offs between them.
